Easy Baklava Recipe
A delicious greek dessert, baklava is something that i've been making for many years, especially for the holidays. The best part is, it’s so dang easy to make! Made from thin layers of phyllo dough, sugar, nuts, and honey, you will love this sweet treat!
When working with phyllo dough, you have to be careful that it doesn't dry and crack since it is so thin! Throughout the assembling process, keep it covered with a damp paper towel.
Above is a photo of the finished product! My oh my, it is oh so good! The inside of the baklava is nice and soft, and you can feel the texture of the multiple layers of phyllo dough. Since it is pre-cut before baking, it has a nice caramelized crust.
Delicious Easy Greek Baklava Recipe
1 package of phyllo dough
1 cup chopped nuts (i like to use walnuts, pecans, and almonds)
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 cup melted butter
1/4 cup honey
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup honey
1 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter the bottom and sides of a pan (9" x 13" is preferred).
In a bowl, mix together chopped nuts, sugar and cinnamon (smell the mixture and if the cinnamon smell isn't strong enough, add a bit more). Set aside and unroll package of phyllo dough. Measure and cut the dough to fit inside your pan.
Place one sheet of phyllo dough in your pan, and use a brush to thoroughly butter the dough. Add five more layers, making sure you butter each layer, one by one.
Sprinkle a small handful of your nut & sugar mixture on top and drizzle some honey. Add a layer of phyllo dough on top, and butter, then sprinkle the mixture again, and drizzle honey. Repeat this step 8-10 times, or until you have 5 sheets of phyllo dough left.
When you are left with your five sheets, do not add the mixture to these layers, and just be sure to butter each one. On the top, do a final drizzle of honey.
Taking a sharp knife, cut your baklava in diamond shapes (see photo), making sure you cut all the way through to the bottom. Place in pre-heated oven, and bake for 45 minutes, until the top is golden and crisp (see photo for reference). *while the baklava is baking, you will need to make the syrup!
Combine all of the syrup ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until it becomes a little thick like a glaze.
When the baklava is done baking, take out of the oven and immediately begin pouring the syrup over every inch of the pan. Cool for about 30 minutes, and enjoy! Usually, I don't wait until it is cooled because I have no patience, so I eat it while it's still hot!
If you have any questions, just ask and i'll try to help you out! Enjoy!
